King Florestan XX111 and his Queen have invited all the fairies to be present as godmothers at the christening of their infant daughter, Aurora. Cuttalabutte, the Master of Ceremonies, has forgotten to invite the wicked fairy Carabosse.
Carabosse however does arrive in a foul mood at having been omitted from the guest list.
As her christening gift to Aurora, she vows that one day the princess will prick her finger on the point of a spindle and die.
But the Lilac Fairy has yet to bestow her gift on the princess and so changes Carabosse’s wicked wish by promising that Aurora will not die but, instead, fall into a deep sleep from which she will be awakened by a Prince’s kiss.
